BOTSWANA
Botswana is Africa's
true democracy, peaceful, honest, and
a successful nation.
The area comprising Botswana is 581.730
km2, situated in the centre of Souhtern
Africa and is landlocked between South
Africa. Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
It lies on average 950 metres above
sea level and is more tha 600km form
the nearest ocean. Three quarters of
the country is almost desert with the
exception of summer rains. The majority
of it's people live in the eastern part
of the country.
Botswana is focused
on authentic wildlife experiences, and
mass tourism has been abandoned. Most
of the countries most productive wildlife
areas lies outside the parks, and this
has been divided into private reserves.
Almost forty percent of the country
has been set aside for wildlife. Safari
companies have to abide strictly by
the guidelines to prevent overcrowding.
Companies also have to train and employ
local people and they are obliged to
pay large amounts to the communities
or the Government for being there. Whilst
most of Botswana's best wildlife are
in the private reserves, there are still
has areas for the general public.
To reach the wildlife
reserves are by daily flights into the
city of Maun , gateway to the Okavango
Delta, Moremi Reserve, Savute and the
Kalahari. There are also regular flights
into the town of Kasane, gateway to
northern Chobe.
The Okavango delta,
also known as "the Jewel of Africa"
has to be Africa's most incredible wildlife
sanctuary. This remarkable area is a
wetland paradise located within the
dry arid Kalahari Desert. It rests between
shallow fault lines at the end of the
Great Rift Valley. Each year floodwater
flows into the Okavango from it's source
in the central African highlands more
than a thousand kilometres away. These
waters flow southward into the Kalahari
Desert, forming the unique wetland known
as the Okavango Delta.
The heart of the Okavango
Delta is the Moremi Game Reserve. All
the major habitats of the Okavango are
preserved here. Around the Moremi Game
Reserve are the large private reserves
leased to private safari companies.
Varied activities are offered such as
game drives in open safari vehicles,
boating and canoeing, elephant safaris,
and even hot-air ballooning trips.
To the north of the
Okavango Delta are the Chobe and Linyanti
game reserves. These areas are renowned
for predators and large concentrations
of game. There are many varied habitats
within the Chobe and Linyanti parks,
marshes, waterways, riverine forests,
dry woodlands and the Savuti Channel,
a waterway connecting the Linyanti river
the Chobe National Park. The Savuti
has dried up for the past twenty five
years and today, it is open grassland,
home to a variety of animal species.
The Linyanti wildlife reserve is a 275
000 acre private reserve on Chobe's
western boundary, very different from
the Okavango.
The Kalahari grasslands
and the lunar landscape of the Makgadikgadi
Pans completes your Botswana safari.
The Contrast of this area, to the green,
game rich Okavango, Linyanti, and Chobe
regions is remarkable. The desert experience
focuses on species unique to the area,
as well as the geology, anthropology
and archaeology of the Kalahari. The
Makgadikgadi is a relic of an ancient
superlake, having dried up thousand
of years ago. When the summer rains
come, the pans are filled with water
becoming the breeding ground for huge
flocks of flamingos and other migratory
birds. The rains also regenerate the
last remaining migration of zebra and
wildebeest in Southern Africa. For those
who want an off the beaten track experience,
the Kalahari should be included in your
safari.
