MATOBO
HILLS NATIONAL PARK
The This
43 000 ha park is located to the
south of Bulawayo and is a sanctuary
for white rhino, giraffe, sable
impala, and a large leopard population.
The park, famed for its massive
boulders and balancing rocks are
especially renowned for birds of
prey and notably for the worlds
largest concentration of black eagle.
The name means "bald heads"
Among the jumble of rugged hills
there are whale back mountains and
caves and cliffs, adorned with some
of the finest bushman engravings
and paintings.
At least five of the painted caves
have been documented in detail.
The museum at Pomongwe site is
recommended , where thousands of
stone and Iron Age artefacts are
on display. Some thought to date
back to 14 000 BC.
At the Nswatugi cave is a fine interpretive
exposition of paintings and Silozwanae
to the south of the park contains
a fascinating range of painted subjects,
including a 2m tall giraffe and
a snake with antelope's head. A
wealth of treasures surround the
park , such as Fort Usher where
the Boy Scout Movement was conceived
by Lord Baden-Powell. Cecil John
Rhodes was buried in the National
park.
MATOBO HILLS LODGE
Located within this mysteriously
beautiful park, set amongst the
boulders, accommodation in Large
twin en suite chalets. Lounge\ dining
room and rock swimming pool as well
as chalets all have incredible views
of the magnificent rock formations.

are offered from Matobo Hills Lodge.
